“Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolour, or I will come back wrapped in it—but I will return for sure.” These inspiring words of Captain Vikram Batra continue to echo in the hearts of every Indian, reminding us of the extraordinary courage displayed during the Kargil War.
Every year on 26 July, India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the historic victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1999 Kargil War. It is a day to honour the brave soldiers who fought fearlessly in the icy mountains of Kargil and made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
The Kargil War began when Pakistani intruders occupied strategic peaks on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. In response, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, a determined military campaign to reclaim every inch of Indian territory. Despite harsh weather, steep terrain, and enemy advantage, our soldiers displayed unmatched bravery, determination, and patriotism.
The victory was achieved through the courage of countless brave hearts, including Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, and many other valiant soldiers whose sacrifices are forever etched in the history of India.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a remembrance of a military triumph; it is a reminder of the values that define our nation—courage, sacrifice, unity, and unwavering devotion to the motherland. It inspires every citizen to respect the Armed Forces and contribute to building a strong, united, and responsible India.
As we proudly salute the Tricolour, let us also remember the families of our martyrs, whose strength and sacrifices continue to inspire generations. The freedom, peace, and security we enjoy today are possible because of the vigilance and dedication of our brave soldiers standing guard at our borders.
On this Kargil Vijay Diwas, let us bow our heads in gratitude to every soldier who served the nation with honour. Their bravery teaches us that true patriotism lies not only in words but also in selfless service and commitment to the country.
Let us pledge to uphold the values for which our heroes fought and sacrificed.
